" I honestly think this is a terrible mistake by Benitez. Liverpool looked the best team in the prem for the first few games of last season until Xabi sustained his foot injury against Portsmouth. Without him we into freefall starting with the very next game away to Porto. Gareth Barry is a good honest pro who will do his best for the team but he is no Xabi Alonso. Not only is Xabi younger than Barry but also has far more experience, having played in World Cups, European Championships and Champions League finals. We are giving away all that class and experience to get enough money so that we can afford an older and less talented player who will hopefully cost less. Welcome to progress Tom Hicks style. "
