Carragher: Let’s make a statement today
Jamie Carragher has urged his Liverpool teammates to silence their critics by taking three points off Chelsea at Anfield this afternoon.
The Reds begin the day five points behind leaders Manchester United and looking to end a run of three successive draws.
Carragher admits recent results have been hugely frustrating, but
he believes the team is playing well enough to quickly return to
winning ways.
"There's no better way to respond than against one of our biggest
rivals. It is a game that can get us right back in the race," said the
Liverpool defender. The message to the fans is that we are still in there fighting.
Our spirit has never been in question. We have played almost 40 games
this season and lost two, so that shows we have all the fight we need. What we have to do is open teams up a bit more and be a bit more
ruthless when we get a lead. This is a big chance for us against
Chelsea to make a statement. They are a great side, one of the best in
the world, so if we win it will mean more than just three points. It
would give us a huge lift psychologically. I don't think performances have dropped off. It's been a case of a
bit of bad luck. We conceded a late penalty at Wigan, then there was
the set-piece against Everton. Small details can mean so much. The manager is always emphasising
the importance of the small details, but that's something we haven't
been taking care of."
